Imagine stepping into a quaint, snow-covered
town of just 1,890 people, where everyone knows everyone and the biggest
excitement is a new town hall. That's exactly what Sheriff Ulysses (Bob
Odenkirk) expects when he arrives in Normal, Minnesota, for what he hopes will
be eight weeks of easy duty as the interim lawman. His goal is simple:
"Leave this town just the way I found it".
But in Ben Wheatley's hyper-violent,
action-packed thriller Normal, nothing is ever that simple. The
film, written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and Odenkirk
himself, takes the familiar "stranger in a strange town" trope and
turns it into a gloriously unhinged bloodbath.
A Town with a Big Secret
Ulysses's suspicions are aroused almost
immediately. The townsfolk are a little too welcoming, the
police department is suspiciously well-stocked with weapons, the local yarn
store has a police scanner, and the hardware store has a locked closet nobody
wants to discuss. There's also the mysterious death of his predecessor, Sheriff
Gunderson, and the $16.8 million the town has somehow raised for a new civic
building.
When a bungled bank robbery reveals a vault
overflowing with cash and gold bars, Ulysses finds himself protecting the
hapless thieves—they're the only ones not trying to kill him. Soon, the entire
town transforms into a "mysteriously activated sleeper cell of
assassins," and Ulysses is caught in the middle of a conspiracy that
involves the Japanese yakuza, a mayor with a hidden agenda (a delightful Henry
Winkler), and a mysterious bartender (Lena Headey) who knows more than she lets
on.
Odenkirk's Action Hero Evolution
This is the third major action vehicle for
Odenkirk following the Nobody films, and critics agree it
might be his most convincing showcase yet. Odenkirk's "regular-guy
likability and natural comic timing" once again prove to be perfect
engines for unleashing spectacular mayhem. His Sheriff Ulysses is a man worn
down by personal tragedy, trying to keep his head down but finding himself
forced into action.
The film cleverly inverts genre conventions by
making the drifting outsider the sheriff himself. It also wears its influences
on its sleeve, with clear nods to the Coen Brothers' Fargo (the
previous sheriff's name is Gunderson, a direct reference to Frances McDormand's
iconic character) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet.
Verdict: A Goofy, Gory Good Time
Normal isn't aiming for subtlety. The film's first half is a
slow-burn character piece, full of dry wit and oddball charm. The second half,
however, descends into a "Tarantino-class carnival of dismemberments,
beheadings, firebombings, machine gun battles," and a three-way shootout
in a bar that leaves no bystander standing.
The review aggregator consensus is that while
the twists are predictable and the plot is familiar, the entertainment value is
high. The film's director, Ben Wheatley, handles the action with competence,
and Odenkirk is "golden". It's a fun, violent ride that critics rate
around 2.5 to 3 out of 5 stars—a worthwhile watch for fans of
Odenkirk's unique brand of action-comedy, even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel.
