Story
East of Eden is a multigenerational saga exploring Steinbeck's central
questions of good versus evil and free will versus predestination,
set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing America .
The story begins with Cathy Ames
(Florence Pugh), a bloodied, gravely injured woman who crawls onto the porch of
the Trask ranch in Connecticut . She is taken in by brothers Adam
(Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist). Adam nurses her
back to health and marries her, despite Charles's warnings that something is
deeply wrong with her .
The narrative flashes back to the brothers'
upbringing under their domineering father Cyrus (Tracy Letts), a Civil
War veteran who favors the gentle Adam over the violent Charles, splintering
the family . After Cathy gives birth to twins Cal and Aron, she
shoots Adam and abandons her children, returning to her true nature as a
ruthless brothel madam under the name Kate .
The series follows the Trask family to
California's Salinas Valley, where Adam raises the twins with the help of his
Chinese-American servant Lee (Hoon Lee). Cal and Aron grow into another
generation of Cain and Abel—one dark and rebellious, the other pious and
favored—while the truth about their mother's identity looms over them .
