A Killer Hippo Movie That's More Snack Than
Feast
Hungry is not the movie you think it is. Yes, it's a creature
feature about a rampaging hippopotamus in the Louisiana swamplands. Yes, the
title invites endless Hungry Hungry Hippos jokes. And yes,
director James Nunn (One Shot, Shark Bait) clearly knows
exactly what kind of B-movie he's making. But the real surprise is that beneath
the schlocky premise lies a surprisingly competent—if deeply flawed—survival
thriller.
The Story: A Boat Tour Gone Horribly Wrong
The setup is simple: a group of tourists
embark on a riverboat tour through the Louisiana bayou, hoping to spot
alligators. Their guide, Rodrigo (Michel Curiel), takes them off the beaten
path for an "exclusive adventure." What they find instead is a
massive, territorial hippopotamus with a serious grudge against anything that
floats.
The cast includes Madison Davenport (Sharp
Objects) as Sistine, a woman whose vacation goes from bad to worse after
getting fired over the phone; Olivia Bernstone as her best friend Hannah;
Joaquim de Almeida as Walker, a grizzled hunter who knows more about the hippo
than he lets on; and Tracey Bonner as Dionne, a businesswoman who inexplicably
wears designer heels to a swamp.
What Works: Practical Effects and Genuine
Tension
The film's biggest strength is its commitment
to practical effects. The hippo, when it finally appears, is "impressively
presented through pretty decent CGI with realistic features and movement".
For a low-budget creature feature, that's a genuine win. The attacks are
suspenseful, and the film wisely keeps the creature mostly hidden for the first
hour, building dread through shadows and sudden movements.
The Louisiana swampland setting is also a
character in itself. One reviewer noted that the landscape "reminded me of
the many episodes of Naked and Afraid that I have watched over
the years. This is not the kind of nature that we humans thrive in". The
cinematography captures the oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere of the bayou
effectively.
Perhaps most surprisingly, Hungry is
more character-driven than expected. The script takes time to establish its
cast, ensuring viewers actually care about who lives and who dies. One review
praised it as "a surprisingly character-driven movie, which ensures that
you care about who makes it. And also, who you hope will die next".
What Doesn't: Generic Script and Frustrating
Logic
For every thing Hungry does
right, it stumbles elsewhere. The most common criticism is that the script is
painfully generic. As one IMDb reviewer put it: "you could essentially
replace the hippo in the movie with any other killer animal and it would be the
same result". The film follows the standard animal-attack formula with
little deviation.
The characters, while more developed than
typical for the genre, still make baffling decisions. Reviewers noted that
"some of the characters made decisions that didn't make much sense. As a
group of travelers exploring a dangerous environment, they should have been
better prepared with proper survival gear and safety procedures. Instead, they
often acted carelessly, which made parts of the story feel unrealistic".
The tour guide's decision to continue the trip despite obvious danger is a
particular point of contention.
The pacing is another issue. Despite a lean
92-minute runtime, the film takes "an HOUR to see the full hungry hippo
itself". The middle section drags as characters huddle in trees and wait
for rescue, with the tension feeling "forced instead of natural".
The Verdict
Hungry is a mixed bag. It's better than it has any right to be,
thanks to solid practical effects, a committed cast, and an atmospheric
setting. But it's also held back by a generic script, questionable character
decisions, and pacing that undercuts its own tension.
If you enjoy creature features like Anaconda or Lake
Placid, you'll find Hungry watchable. Just don't expect
anything revolutionary. It's a fun, brainless way to spend 90 minutes—and
sometimes, that's enough.
