The Tower Was Just the Warm-Up
Fall 2: Deadpoint arrives with a simple question: how do you
make a sequel to a film that ended with one character dead and the other
traumatized, and whose entire premise was "don't look down"? The
answer, according to director duo Michael and Peter Spierig, is to go higher,
go to Thailand, and bring a whole new set of characters with a whole new set of
problems.
The 2022 original Fall was a sleeper
hit—a $3 million micro-budget thriller that made $21.8 million in theaters and
found a massive second life on Netflix . It followed two friends stranded atop
a 2,000-foot radio tower with no way down. The sequel, written by original Fall
writers Scott Mann and Jonathan Frank, shifts the action to Mount Kwan in
Thailand, where a treacherous plank walk called the Devil's Elbow awaits .
The Story: A New Sister, A New Nightmare
The film opens with Jax Hunter (Harriet
Slater), sister of Shiloh Hunter (Virginia Gardner), who fell to her death in
the first film. Shiloh has become a posthumous internet
sensation—#fallgirl—thanks to footage of her fatal fall circulating online .
While sorting through Shiloh's belongings, Jax meets Luce (Arsema Thomas), a
close friend of her sister, who suggests they honor Shiloh's legacy by
completing the next challenge on her "fuck-it list": the Devil's
Elbow .
They travel to Thailand with a sketchy guide
named John (Tom Brittney), despite weather conditions that make the climb
illegal and dangerous . Halfway through, an earthquake triggers a rockslide
that destroys their path, separates them from John, and leaves Jax and Luce
stranded 3,000 to 4,000 feet in the air . Forced to navigate back the way they
came, the two must battle unforgiving terrain, unpredictable weather, and their
own fears—and each other .
The Cast: Likable Leads in a Shaky Script
Harriet Slater and Arsema Thomas are widely
praised as the film's strongest assets. Variety notes that Thomas delivers
"the breakthrough performance here," and that both actresses are
"likable, too often a rare quality among young adult protagonists" .
Screen Rant agrees, calling them "solid leads, believably terrified
throughout" .
Tom Brittney, as the guide with questionable
motivations, brings "a convincing authority" to his role, even when
his character's honesty is in doubt . Grace Caroline Currey briefly reprises
her role as Becky from the original, but critics note her appearance feels less
like organic storytelling and more like "the introduction of a new foe at
the end of a Marvel movie" .
What Works: The Thrills Deliver
The film's greatest strength is its commitment
to vertigo-inducing tension. Variety describes it as "an extremely
effective thrill ride, especially on the big screen," successfully
replicating the first film's "vertiginous tension" without feeling
like a carbon copy . Screen Rant praises the "nail-biting, vertiginous
thrills," noting that POV shots and handheld camerawork "amplify the
film's immersiveness" and make viewers feel "as if they, too, are
stranded in an impossible dilemma" .
The Spierig Brothers, who have a visual
effects background from films like Daybreakers and Jigsaw,
stretch their budget effectively. JoBlo notes that while the effects aren't
seamless, they're "mostly impressive," and the brothers "knew
how to stretch out their budget" . One critic even suggests the film makes
more structural sense if viewed as a horror movie where "the monster is
the treacherous climb itself" .
The hallucinations—a weak point in the
original—are also improved. Instead of mere jump scares, they're woven into the
story to provide information rather than just trick the audience .
What Doesn't: Melodrama Overload
The most consistent criticism across reviews
is the film's tonal shift toward melodrama. Variety notes that the script
"duplicates the unexpected disclosures from Fall" but that
"quite frankly, they're silly," unfolding "more like bullet
points on a screenwriter's checklist than natural developments" . A
third-act confrontation occurs "at exactly the wrong time for people who
are supposedly desperate to get off a godforsaken trail, turning a story of
survival and self-actualization into a cartoon" .
Screen Rant is blunter: the sequel "leans
more into melodrama" and "plays like a breezy, paperback thriller one
picks up at the airport has been blended with a daytime soap opera." The
pivot "threatens to undermine the suspense of the story," with
"drab dialogue, thinly developed characters, and leaps in logic that range
from questionable to comical" .
The Guardian's review calls it "a
palm-sweating formula regurgitated with only moderately jolting results,"
noting that "the balance of suspense and stupidity ultimately teeters
towards the latter" . The characters' motivations remain baffling—why
anyone would willingly put themselves in this situation after the first film's
events is never convincingly explained .
The film currently holds a 53% critics' rating
on Rotten Tomatoes .
Verdict
Fall 2: Deadpoint is a mixed bag that will likely satisfy fans
of the original while frustrating those hoping for something more. The thrills
are real, the leads are likable, and the Spierig Brothers know how to craft a
nail-biting set piece. But the script's descent into soap-opera melodrama and
baffling character decisions undercut the tension that made the first film
work.
If you enjoyed Fall and want more of
the same—just higher, deadlier, and with more twists—you'll find enough to
enjoy here. If you're looking for a sequel that elevates the concept, you might
want to keep your expectations at ground level.
