Black Box is not one movie—it's two completely different films sharing the same title. One is a 2020 psychological sci-fi thriller from Blumhouse, and the other is a 2026 airborne horror-disaster film from Final Destination 5 director Steven Quale. Here's a breakdown of both.
1. Black Box (2020) – The Blumhouse
Mind-Bender
The Premise: Nolan Wright (Mamoudou Athie) survives a car crash that
kills his wife but leaves him with severe amnesia. He can't remember his past,
struggles to care for his 10-year-old daughter Ava (Amanda Christine), and
feels like a shell of a man. Desperate, he agrees to an experimental treatment
from Dr. Lillian Brooks (Phylicia Rashad), a neurologist who uses a device
called the "black box" to guide him into his own memories .
But something is wrong. Every time Nolan
enters his memories, a twisted, contorted figure—the "Backwards
Man"—chases him. Faces are blurred. Memories feel foreign. And the deeper
he goes, the more he realizes the truth about who he really is .
What Works: The film's greatest strength is its emotional core.
Mamoudou Athie delivers a deeply vulnerable performance as a man trying to
piece himself together, and his scenes with young Amanda Christine are
genuinely heartbreaking . The twist—that Nolan is actually Thomas Brooks,
Dr. Brooks' dead son, whose consciousness was uploaded into Nolan's body—is
genuinely clever and recontextualizes everything . The "Backwards
Man" creature, performed practically by contortionist Troy James, is
deeply unsettling .
What Doesn't: The third act trades psychological
horror for sentimental drama, losing tension as it explains its mysteries .
The supporting characters are thin, and the film's low-budget Blumhouse origins
are occasionally visible .
Verdict: A compelling, emotionally resonant sci-fi thriller with a
great twist, even if it stumbles in its final stretch. Rating: 3.5/5
2. Black Box: Flight 298 (2026) – The Plane
From Hell
The Premise: Vero Airlines Flight 298 from New Orleans to Seattle
should be routine. But when an elderly passenger dies, passengers begin
bleeding from their eyes, noses, and ears, strange lights appear outside the windows,
and the plane's systems fail one by one, Jeremy (Tom Brittney) and the other
passengers realize they're not dealing with a medical emergency—they're dealing
with something extraterrestrial .
The aliens are intercepting planes mid-flight,
infecting passengers, and letting the planes land so the infected can spread
their presence on the ground. It's a clever twist on Invasion of the
Body Snatchers .
What Works: Tom Brittney is genuinely excellent, bringing credibility
and vulnerability to a film that doesn't always deserve him . The
claustrophobic setting works, the tension builds effectively in the first two
acts, and the creature design is surprisingly effective for a low-budget
film . The ending is dark and memorable .
What Doesn't: The pacing is a major issue—for a film
under 90 minutes, almost nothing happens until the second half . The
dialogue is often cringey, the supporting characters are disposable, and the
CGI ranges from acceptable to genuinely bad, with some moments that look
suspiciously like generative AI . The mystery is resolved too quickly,
trading paranoia for spectacle .
Verdict: A flawed but watchable B-movie that punches above its
weight in the first half before crash-landing in the third. Rating:
